The Hoosier Hills Food Bank, which provides over five million pounds of food annually to over 100 local non-profit organizations through six counties in south-central Indiana. The HHFB has served the community for approximately 41 years, and the need for its services are as great as ever. The Food Bank responded to the pandemic by providing over 12.7 million pounds of food in 2020 and 2021. Numbers started to ease slightly at the beginning of 2022 but then skyrocketed again in early spring as inflation hit low-income people and families hard. HHFB is currently struggling to provide enough food for its partner agencies and programs, which served almost 45,000 households in six counties in the third quarter of this year. This represents an increase of 31% over the first quarter of 2022. The Soup Bowl Benefit is the major annual fundraising event for the Hoosier Hills Food Bank started in 1994 by Carrie Newcomer, Robert Meitus, and a small group of friends. It has grown to be the largest annual event fundraiser for the Food Bank, raising over $200,000 in recent years. The event is sponsored by dozens of local businesses, organizations, and individuals.
